Longines: The Winged Hourglass
Founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, the Longines watchmaking brand has a long history informed by the elegance of its creations. The firm, run by Auguste Agassiz, was originally a watchmaking company similar to many other establishments that flourished in the region. However, in 1867, Ernest Francillon-Agassiz’s successor-chose to break with the standard practices of Swiss watchmaking, He assembled his workers on the same premises and adopted and developed mechanical production processes. The Longines factory was born.
Over the following years, the Saint-Imier manufacture-symbolised by a winged hourglass-grew constantly, producing many watches that met with universal acclaim. It was the leading award winner at the International and Universal Exhibitions (with no fewer than 20 Grand Prix up to the 1929 Universal Exhibition in Barcelona). From 1919, Longines also supplied the aviation world with timepieces and joined the great pioneers of the sky on their revolutionary flights (notably Lindbergh’s epic crossing from New York to Pairs). The watchmaking firm also gained a reputation in the field of sports timekeeping, designing chronometers that made it a household name across the globe. Its instruments officiated at some of the world’s most prestigious sporting events.
Today Longines still champions traditional watchmaking based on the staunch values it has systematically upheld throughout history. The elegance or sporting character of its models are in line with the approaches it has adopted for more than 175 years. Longines also continues to work on timekeeping in the fields of horse riding, gymnastics, short track, archery, tennis and downhill skiing.
